I saw the angel in the marble
and
carved until I set him free.
~Michelangelo
It seems life is more hectic now than ever and for good reason. There’s so much going on in the world that’s completely out of our control.
We’ve been working our way back into normalcy after a two-year plus stretch with a pandemic, political unrest, war and inflation. Yikes!
All concerning for everyone no matter where you live. So what to do? Well, we need to tap into calm from a personal perspective. If not, the stress and worry can take over, which can be quite unpleasant on our mental and physical wellbeing.
Though you can’t control the outside world, you can control your inner world by addressing your challenging nudges that are making you feel uneasy.
We all can open a space for peace and tranquility by making some simple changes that might not seem so simple, but once you’ve powered through them, you’ll feel a sense of relief. I promise.
13 Steps to Feel Calm
- Step Outside: Yep, drop what you’re doing, and step out into the fresh air and listen. Just listen. Hear the sounds of nature and let it in. Note what you hear. Perhaps it’s a dog barking out in the distance, birds singing, children laughing. What do you see? Perhaps a butterfly, flowers, a pool of water. Get present and connect to the earth.
- Breathe: Take a deep breath in to the count of four. Hold it to the count of four. Exhale to the count of four. Do a few rounds of this and watch the calm seep in. This is cycle breathing, a powerful stress reducer.
- Forgive Someone: Okay, I can hear you—hold the horse I’m not forgiving so and so for doing what they did. I get it. You don’t have to forgive the person directly, but if you forgive from your heart, it will allow you to move on. It will reduce the stress and anxiety that’s been burdening you all these years. You’ll no longer give your power away.
- Cancel Something: Take the time to look through your agenda and take something off. Yes, take away a to-do. Instantly you’ll feel a sense of relief because you just bought yourself some me-time. We all need a moment to just be and not have to do.
- Walk: Every expert touts walking is a stress reliever, and it is. And the beautiful thing is that it’s free. Put on your sneakers and a good sun block, grab your sunglasses and go. Don’t listen to anything but nature. Don’t be yacking on the phone or texting. This is an opportunity for you to unplug and move.
- Declutter Something: Take a few minutes and purge a drawer or a corner of the room or a closet from stuff that’s taking up space. Invest an hour to move and toss things that are only causing you angst. Clearing space is a healthy, quick fix to calm.
- Color: Buy a kid’s coloring book and crayons or borrow your child’s and make a pretty picture. Lay on your stomach on the bed or carpet like you did as a kid and make it beautiful. When you finish, post it on your fridge to give you a reminder that playing is good for you, not to mention fun.
- A Spot of Tea: Make a hot cup of a specialty tea and sip it in a quiet spot with no interruptions. Perhaps you have an outdoor porch or patio to sit quietly. Find a tea you’ve never tried before, such as chamomile or peppermint or orange spice. It’s refreshing and showing self-love and self-care—and you deserve it.
- Take a Nap: Sometimes we need to step away from the busy and take a little nap. Naps are a way to restore energy, taking a moment for self, and letting go of the busy to regroup.
- Say I’m Sorry: In our hectic life we can be quick to respond to our loved ones with unkind words. IF you do, you’re normal, but let’s step out of norm and say I’m sorry I shouldn’t have responded with such harsh words. Owning our words is freeing and actually feels good, restoring calm.
- Pray: Prayers don’t have to be set prayers if you aren’t particularly religious. Think of a prayer as a conversation to a Higher Source—whatever that means to you. If you have an arsenal of prayers awesome, say them. If not, no worries. Talk to that higher energy like you would a best friend.
- Call a Friend: Pick up the phone the old fashion way and call someone. Too often we text or email or connect on social media without a “live” talk. Hear the voice and express what’s going on in your life. And listen to what your friend is up to. We’re too disconnected these days with all our techy stuff. Break free and find that person to say hello to.
- Help Someone: When we give of our self it feels good, really good. Do something kind for someone in need and watch the happy calm flow in. Think about someone you know that’s down and out and do a simple gesture that could make a difference in their life. Send flowers, or bake a popular dish and take it to them. Or, send an anonymous card with a little money and some kind words.
Tap into one of the thirteen or several of the thirteen ways to feel calmer now and watch what happens.
Are you stressed? Do you feel there’s no “me time”? If you have a way to calm down that’s not on this list, what is it?
