Boosting Your Creativity

We all can be creative. Yes, all of us. But what might be creative to one person may not be creative to another.

Take me, for instance, I’m not a fashionista person. I like nice clothes but it’s not important to me to wear the latest fashion. In other words, I’m not a creative person when it comes to clothing.

But what is important to me is to create a space that provides peace and tranquility.

My creative space is my swing outside. It’s red plush cushions and pillows covered with a canopy, allow for an area to read or write or simply look out into the blue sky or a night filled with stars and think. That’s my creative space that feeds my soul.

What feeds your soul?

What is your creative self? Perhaps you don’t believe you have a creative self. You do. Really. We are not all going to be the greatest writer ever or a scientist that makes an enormous impact on society. And that’s okay, because that’s not the goal here.

The goal is to tap into finding your creative self, whatever that might look like to you.
You may think, why would I want to do that? Well, because when we create, it makes us feel good. It’ makes us feel accomplished and not stagnant.

And yes, it could be as simple as creating a bouquet of fresh flowers you picked from the woods or your yard.  Or perhaps you create birdhouses or paint clowns. Creating is personal.

I created a space outside with my swing and canopy overhead that opens space to daydream, write, read and connect to my inner self. That’s my idea of being creative and may not be yours, and that’s okay.

Whatever you create, it will make you feel good inside, deep in your soul. That good feeling that makes you smile on the inside and the outside all at the same time. So how to do this….

How to become more creative

1. Carve Out Time: Some of us are fortunate and inspiration comes tumbling down out of nowhere giving the aha this is it. But, for most of us, that’s not quite how it happens. It might not be that light bulb moment, and that’s okay. You’ll find your creative self when you set aside time to work your personal magic, whether it’s in the arts, painting a picture, making a sculpture, carving out a birdhouse, or writing that novel. Whatever it is, you need to carve out time to learn and practice the skills needed to create your creation.
2. Step Outdoors: Our greatest ideas will come when we ease the mind by stepping out into nature. Take a deep breath and feel the earth beneath your feet, embracing all that’s around you, naturally. Some of my greatest ideas come to me when I’m walking or biking out in nature.
3. Never Give UP: Remember that creative piece you started last month, yes, the one you tossed in the closet or under your bed? Go get it. Take it out and revisit what you were doing. Sometimes we need a pause before unleashing our creative juices once again. There is no rush or push but the one you place on yourself. There’s no deadline but an opportunity to finish something you started.
4. Try Mapping: Mapping is a fun way to brainstorm ideas in a creative way. When I was working on my dissertation in my doctorate program, we brainstormed on a large poster board, mapping out ideas on what we wanted to work on. I knew I was going to write a dissertation on conquering food addiction from the whole person approach: body, mind, and spirit. So, that’s what I did with my mapping, drawing out from the center of my dream and plan. I actually put the map in my first book, Release Your Obsession with Food, Heal from the Inside Out because I loved my creation so much. Creating your map, you’ll brainstorm ideas, jotting down whatever thoughts or notions come to you, no matter how far out or silly they may seem to you. There are no rules. It’s free flowing ideas without restraints. The map I worked on flowed with ideas that later I tightened and edited before using in my book.
5. Daydream: When you let your mind wander or daydream with intention, ideas will populate that you might not have considered before. Some of my greatest ideas came to me during movement meditation, my favorite time to let my creative juices flow in. Practice this technique and it will come naturally to you. And you might, like me, find you turn to your wandering mind for your greatest inspirations.

So, there you have it. Go out and create. We all can be creative. Yes, all of us. But your creative is yours and yours alone. You are not in competition with anyone.
